Cuttable Lighting Solution for New York Law Office Balances Available Natural Light

Several months ago, the international law firm Crowell & Moring relocated its New York City office to a tony new address: the newly constructed 58-story office tower in Hudson Yards designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Spanning a total of 71,000 square feet over two floors with enviable views of Manhattan, the law firm is the building’s first tenant. With so many floor-to-ceiling windows choosing the right lighting solution was of considerable importance to balance with the ample natural light.
Crowell’s New York office has more than doubled in size over the past five years to include approximately 170 lawyers and staff, but the recent move is not just about providing more room. “We have moved to a better space to suit our growing needs,” said Glen McGorty, managing partner of Crowell’s New York office. “This is an office that speaks to the caliber of our clients, the sophistication of our matters, and the client service excellence that we deliver across our entire firm.”

The office boasts an innovative and efficient design, complete with modern amenities such as standing desks for worker comfort and flexibility. In addition, there is a multi-purpose room that spills out into a two-story reception area with a floating staircase. Took’s Café, named after one of the firm’s founders, Eldon H. (“Took”) Crowell, serves as a gathering spot for lawyers and staff.
“The many stand-out features of our new office appeal to the next generation of diverse talent we continue to attract as we actively expand our New York team,” noted McGorty.
The space was designed by HYL Architecture (now part of Perkins&Will), with lighting design by Loop Lighting. Local domestic manufacturer Coronet Lighting provided a solution to a common lighting challenge in commercial offices.
The Lalina Cove and Perimeter series – which officially debuted to the industry at this month’s LEDucation show – are used throughout the Crowell office. The Lalina product family consists of a pair of field-curvable and cuttable lighting systems designed to meet the demands of complex, intricate spaces.
In fact, the Lalina family was developed in direct response to a common challenge faced by lighting designers and architects: the limitations of rigid, prefabricated lighting systems that are unable to suitably adapt to site conditions, often falling short (or long) when it comes to precision.

“Our goal is to equip architects and designers with the tools they need to bring their visions to life,” says JR Krauza, VP/Product at Coronet. “After hearing from our partners in the field about the difficulties in specifying products that perfectly fit coves and walls, we recognized the need for a new solution — one that could be easily adapted, cut, and curved on-site. This ensures a perfect fit every time, ultimately streamlining both the design and installation processes.”
Both Lalina Cove and Lalina Perimeter feature a mud-in installation system for a clean, integrated appearance with no visible hardware. Lalina Cove is designed for ceiling illuminations, providing soft, indirect light that enhances spatial aesthetics; and Lalina Perimeter is tailored for wall applications. These adaptable systems can be customized in length, light output, and color temperature, making them ideal for various architectural environments from office and hospitality spaces to retail settings. Furthermore, the patent-pending Lalina family is BABA- and BAA-compliant and uses aluminum extrusions made from 85% recycled content.
